Professor Sunil Ohri

Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Sunil Ohri is Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Southampton.

Professor Ohri was schooled in London and received his medical degree at The Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University College London.

He trained in cardiac surgery in London at the Middlesex Hospital, The Hammersmith Hospital and at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Harefield Hospital in cardiac transplantation. He undertook research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital as a British Heart Foundation Fellow.

Professor Ohri joined Southampton General Hospital as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in 1998. He was appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer in 1999 by the University of Southampton and awarded a chair as Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2019.

Professor Ohri has performed over 6000 heart operations since 1998. He currently has one of the largest practices in the UK and performs over 300 major heart operations a year. He believes in tailoring evidence-based care to meet every patient’s individual needs. He is recognised as one of the UK’s top performing Cardiac Surgeons, both in terms of surgical outcomes and patient feedback testimonials.

SURGICAL EXPERIENCE AND SUCCESS

Professor Ohri has a wide experience in all aspects of cardiac surgery. He performs all the major adult cardiac heart operations including coronary artery bypass surgery and valve replacement and repair surgery. He has particular interests in minimally invasive aortic valve surgery, management of patients with bicuspid aortic valve disease, re-operative valve surgery, aortic root surgery, mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass grafting with endoscopic vein harvesting and beating heart coronary artery bypass grafting.

Professor Ohri is one of the highest performing cardiac surgeons in the UK in terms of outcomes. Data has been released by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) since 2010. The most recent update confirms that Professor Ohri has one of the largest practices in the UK with a particularly complex case mix. It also shows his patient’s survival outcomes are outstanding.

Data for the most recent update by SCTS on Professor Ohri’s outcomes, for April 2015 to March 2018, can be found here.

PROFESSIONAL SURGICAL LEADERSHIP

Professor Ohri has dedicated himself to his cardiac surgery patients and also to his professional cardiac organisations, his surgical trainees, his hospitals and the wider NHS for over 20 years.

At University Hospital Southampton he has held various leadership roles and is currently Lead Cardiac Surgeon. He has been on the Executive of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland and has held positions such as Publication Secretary and Annual Meeting Treasurer. He has been Programme Director for Training Cardiothoracic Registrars for the Wessex and Oxford Deaneries. He is currently a Board Member of the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations for Cardiothoracic surgery and remains an Assessor for the Intercollegiate Cardiothoracic Surgery examinations.

Professor Ohri’s additional professional affiliations include: Royal Colleges of Surgeons (England, Edinburgh and Glasgow), Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, British Medical Association, Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA), European Society for Cardiology and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery.

SCIENTIFIC AND ACADEMIC CONTRIBUTIONS

Professor Ohri has a national and international reputation for scientific scholarship. Throughout his 22-year tenure as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon he has also held a joint Senior Lecturer Position with the University of Southampton. Professor Ohri was awarded a chair as Professor of Cardiac Surgery by the university in 2019 as recognition of his ongoing scientific endeavour.

Professor Ohri’s undertook post-doctoral research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital as British Heart Foundation Fellow. He was awarded his post Bachelor of Medicine higher doctorate MD for his research into the pathophysiology of cardiopulmonary bypass and it’s impact on the gut. As a result, his ongoing research interests include the pathophysiology of cardiopulmonary bypass, bicuspid aortic valve disease and aortopathy, the impact of diabetes on the aortic valve and transcatheter interventions for valvular heart disease. He has supervised the research of numerous students and cardiac Surgical trainees, 9 of whom have successfully been awarded their own higher doctorates. He has been the recipient of 26 research grants and Principal Investigator of 31 studies.

Professor Ohri has authored 4 books on cardiac surgery and published more than 160 articles and numerous abstracts in leading scientific journals. A full list of his publications can be found below.
